The History of Alexander Henderson Elementary School

Alexander Henderson Elementary School opened its doors for students during the fall of 1985 and is situated within the community of Montclair.

The school is named for Alexander Henderson (1738 - 1815), who came from Scotland to Virginia about the year 1756, settled first in Colchester, later moving to Dumfries. Though he served not inconspicuously in the American Revolution, his chief claim to fame lies in his having been the father of the American "chain-store." This ambitious Scot, after moving to Dumfries, established a business. When business became prosperous, store branches were set up at Colchester, Occoquan, and Alexandria.

One of his six sons, Archibald Henderson, became the fifth commandant of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1820 until 1859.
